If you’ve been smoking for the last 20 or 30 years, you might not remember what made you start in the first place. Of course, we weren’t as aware of the health risks associated with cigarettes a long time ago, but nobody who’s alive now started smoking believing the habit to be healthy. In reality, lots of us started smoking from a young age because we thought it was somehow cool or trendy, and unfortunately, the same can be said for many of today’s youngsters.
The percentage of adult smokers in Australia has halved since 1980, but there are still an estimated 2.6 million smokers in the country. It’s entirely up to adults whether they smoke or not, but youngsters are still finding ways to get cigarettes regardless of the law. An estimated 10.3% of 16 to 17-year-olds smoke, which isn’t far from the 13% of the adult population that smokes.
The government has taken measures to try and reduce the number of smokers in the country, usually by increasing taxes in an attempt to price people out of the market. However, an overwhelming portion of smokers come from the poorest areas of Australia, and studies have shown that many people will skip a meal in order to afford a pack of cigarettes.
Perhaps if we want to encourage people to give up smoking, we need to try and eliminate the belief that cigarettes are somehow hip. Maybe it’s time that smokers knew more about e-cigarettes, which many experts agree are healthier than real cigarettes.
What’s the Buzz Surrounding E-Cigs?
Increasingly, people are choosing to vape instead of smoke, which refers to the practice of using an e-cigarette. Admittedly, because e-cigs are a relatively new widespread trend, there has been little research into the long-term effects of vaping. However, it’s likely that e-cigs are healthier than real cigarettes for the following reasons:
- There’s no tar in e-cigs:
Cigarettes contain thousands of harmful chemicals, many of which are found in the tar. Plus, tar can clog our lungs and cause breathing difficulties, which can lead to complications later in life. E-cigs, fortunately, contain zero tar. - There are fewer carcinogens in e-cigs than real cigarettes:
Studies have shown that cigarettes contain more than 60 known carcinogens, all of which have been linked to various cancers. You won’t find a fraction of the carcinogens found in cigarettes in the electronic alternative. - No smoke
When you use an e-cig, the gas you exhale is almost entirely water vapour, which means no more hot smoke going into your lungs.
Consider Switching to E-Cigs
Some people are worried about the impression it gives off when celebrities are pictured vaping, but if e-cigs really are healthier than their traditional counterpart, now might be the time to show e-cigs in a better light than cigarettes.
In addition to likely being healthier than cigarettes, e-cigs are cheaper, less damaging to the environment, and available in a wider range of flavours, which is why you should at least consider making the switch sooner rather than later.
