Jorge Serra Used Light Painting to Create These Stunning Images

"It started has a hobby that soon developed into conceptualised way of approaching new things." explains photographer Jorge Serra in an email to us before we interviewed him. "I started with film cameras, disposable and what was around. Then moved into digital with a point and shoot, bridge cameras and then moved up to M4/3." Now, Jorge shoots Sony, with only prime lenses. But of course, gear isn't everything and you can see in his images. Jorge is a genuine creative that finds ways to tell stories in a single frame. For this project, he explained that part of the creative process was working with City Number Nine--who he is good friends with. And so the comfort they had with each other helped things just flow.

In light of the recent news of Fujifilm hiking up prices for photographic films and photographic papers, the film photography community continues to lament the company's dwindling support for its film products. Could this be a good time for photographers to start printing their work (if they haven't done so yet) on the company's photo papers instead?

Open up Instagram and type in the name of any landmark, or any iconic place anywhere in the world and you will see hundreds of thousands, sometimes even millions of images that all look the same. Travel photography is nothing new, in fact capturing images of the places we visit is a favorite pastime of many, but why do we feel the need to copy images that have already been taken before? A new app has just been released that makes us ask this question, and we have to wonder if services like Instagram, and apps like Explorest are killing the desire to make original content. Lets explore this a little further after the break.

Is Professional Photography Dead, or is The Profession Alive And Kicking?

10 years ago or so, if someone had said professional photography will die due to ultra affordable cameras and powerful smartphone cameras, professional photographers would have roared out with laughter so loud it would have been heard in camera shops and studios around the globe, but here we are in 2019 where everyone with an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy something-or-other can take really great quality pictures. Couple this with the fact that cheap, yet powerful DSLR and Mirrorless camera kits sold at big box retailers all seem to come with a Facebook page entitled {insert name here} photography, and you can begin to see why some think the role of the professional photographer may be against the ropes. Join us after the break as we explore this a little further.

Almost every photographer has had a "Nifty Fifty" in their arsenal at some point during their career, due to the popularity of the versatile 50mm focal length, suitable for portraiture, landscapes, street, and many other genres of photography. With this in mind, it made all the sense in the world that Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f1.8 S was one of the three lenses that Nikon introduced during their launch of the brand new Z Mount camera system. Nikon was kind enough to send us a copy of the lens along with the brand new Z6 and Z7 cameras to review, so we naturally put it through its paces of test how well the lens performed.

She's been published a number of times and has won even more awards for her work. So when she submitted "Pink Kiss" to our Creating the Photograph series, we were very intrigued. The photo doesn't have a whole lot of post-production and instead focuses more on in-camera techniques and lighting to get the look that we see. There isn't any sort of post-production trickery or layer upon layer--instead there is just Mary Ann's own creativity and technical know how. Here's how she got the shot.

We see the work of Reka Nyari as perfect examples of this, in the way she captures the stories intricately inked on her subjects' bodies. Captivating, raw, and highly creative, her photos celebrate both the beauty of the female form and how her subjects themselves have taken to artful tattoos to transform themselves or immortalize their personal stories.

The Industry Needs to Stop Taking Photographers Image Rights ASAP

There are a ton of services out there that market themselves as the perfect way for photographers to get their work seen by, and possibly even purchased by major brands and organizations, all you have to do is sign up to use, upload your images and then wait for all of that exposure to pay off; only there's a catch. A lot of these services state in the small print that you will be giving up all image rights, and that you can never claim to be the photographer who took the image. Wait. What? The saying 'if it sounds too good to be true, it's too good to be true' definitely rings out here, and a recent report about another image rights grab has just confirmed that this issue is just getting worse.

All About The Roof: Warning Signs That Your Roof Needs Repair

All About The Roof: Warning Signs That Your Roof Needs Repair

The roof is probably one of the most important components of your house. Not only does it protect you from the harsh rays of the sun, the chilling blow of the wind, the heavy drops of rain, and the unforgiving fall of snow, but it also gives your house an added aesthetic appeal.

More and more homeowners are now buying new roofs because most of the roofs of today have already reached their useful end. Also, new homeowners are opting for storm-resistant roofing systems that have only been recently developed.

As a matter of fact, according to a recent study conducted by The Freedonia Group, the demand for roofing in the United States alone is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9%, reaching $19.9 billion in the year 2021.

Enough of the pep talk and let us get down to business. Continue reading below to learn more about the warning signs that should put you on notice that your roof needs immediate repair or replacement.

Warning Sign No. 1: Missing or Damaged Shingles

In case of missing or damaged shingles, examine the extent of the destruction.

The more the number of missing or damaged shingles, the more evident it is that a mere roof repair will not be able to fully address the problem. However, roof replacement is the last resort. If the roof can still be repaired partially and effectively, then there is no reason why it should not be the first option.

Make sure to contact a reliable roofing service provider and ask for their professional opinion. You can find excellent roofing services by asking for referrals and recommendations from friends or relatives, or by visiting websites like www.provenroofing.com.

Warning Sign No. 2: Water Stains On The Roofing

Stains on the roofing would indicate a mild to severe roof leak, depending on the surface area covered and the seriousness of the staining. At first look, a roof leak may not be very obvious to the naked eye as they are very hard to spot.

Leaks, whether big or small, can cause damaging effects on your roof. So be on the lookout for the first signs of a roof leak — like water leaking downwards, or brownish or yellowish stains on the ceiling — and act fast as these subtle signs sometimes point to damage requiring immediate reroofing.

Warning Sign No. 3: Old Age

If your roof is already old or has been serving you for quite a long time now, then you should consider replacing it with a new one. A good rule of thumb for measuring the ideal life span of a roof is 20 to 25 years.

However, there are still many variables that would affect this rule of thumb. Take into account how many storms or hurricanes your roof has endured, how many shingles are now missing, curved or damaged, the presence or absence of a roof leak, and the condition of your roof ventilation.
