Washing Machines: Problems Worth Getting Into a Spin About

It’s one of the most used appliances in the household, yet everyone will experience that sinking feeling when their washing machine suddenly starts to act strangely. On some occasions the reason will be minor, but on others it could result in a major repair or even replacement of the appliance itself.

Following on from the above, let’s hone in on washing machines and discuss some of the biggest problems – and how you might go about resolving them.

Problem #1 – The machine won’t drain

This first problem might seem to be huge, but it can be sorted relatively easily. The only point we need to mention is that you need to be strong enough to maneuver the machine into a position where you can access the drain hose. You need to proceed to remove the hose, allowing the water to flow out. It should go without saying that you need to have a bucket or something else to collect the drained water!

Problem #2 – It’s stopped spinning

While there can be major issues behind this problem, it’s not always the case. In fact, one of the most common reasons why a machine stops spinning is because there isn’t enough in the drum. Modern machines have systems in place to prevent really small loads from spinning, as the machine can spin out of control due to the light weight.

At the same time, the problem can exist for the opposite reason. If too much laundry is in there, it might prevent the machine from draining. For safety reasons, this immediately means that the drum won’t spin as well.

Problem #3 – The bouncing washing machine

This is probably one of the least common problems out there and if you have experienced it before, you will have well and truly been made aware of it. In short, midway through a cycle, your washing machine will start to bounce all over the place and come away from its usual position.

At times, it might be that you have overloaded the machine. However, on most occasions this is purely due to a technical issue. The concrete weights on older machines can dislodge and cause this, while you should also check the shock absorbers between the drum and chassis to ensure there’s nothing untoward.

Problem #4 – Noisy machines

Again, if you’ve had this problem, you will have known about it.

The easiest one is if something is dislodged in the drum, like a coin. In this case your machine should have a removable paddle which will allow you to remove it. Other problems which cause this include failed bearings, or if something has become stuck in the drain pump. In the case of the latter, your first port of call should be the filter.
